Shoreditch Spotlight: Where the APLO Team Hang Out
20th of August 2018
Ok, it’s changing fast, but Shoreditch was and still is a hub for creativity. The graffiti strewn streets, eccentric food pop-ups, independent boutiques, gritty pubs, and crowded neon-lit night clubs - all exude exciting creative energy - and is an obvious reason we chose Shoreditch as the base for APLO HQ. And seeing as we’re shedding a light on all the extraordinary places in our neck of the woods, who better than the members of Team APLO to help you discover all the curious and colourful places that Shoreditch has to offer? Besides, we’re the people who spend most of our days in this incredible ever-changing neighbourhood that doesn’t sit still for a minute – people working to ‘give it a go’ and lead less ordinary lives. So here’s some of our favourite Shoreditch haunts; and if you do check them out, you might even spot us having a cheeky drink.

Barber and Parlour
160 meters from APLO HQ

Barber and Parlour is probably the APLO team’s unofficial office during hot summer days. You’ll often spot us, laptops on, iced coffees in hand, chatting about our favourite places in London. It’s a beautifully authentic building that’s also multi-purpose (check out Electric Cinema in the basement); and the furniture inside is so unique. Every item has a story to tell. It’s got an easy going vibe, the cinema downstairs always has something going on, and the resident barbers are always buzzing away in the corner.

Well and Bucket
480 meters from APLO HQ

The Well and Bucket is just a stunning pub. The huge Victorian style artworks on the wall add a completely different feel to the space. It looks a little bit run down but in a good way, but has a lot of character. Downstairs, there’s a whole other room that serves great oysters and cocktails.

The Book Club on Leonard Street isn't going to surprise anyone, as it's a staple in the area. But for me, it's one of the most consistent hangouts in Shoreditch - in an effortlessly cool kinda way. It ticks all the boxes. It's creative energy stems from their fusion of events, late-night eating and drinking options, and various exhibitions (run through their umbrella brand SuperCulture), and it always has a very chilled vibe. It's a definite Shoreditch must, if you've never popped in.

Rough Trade East
400 meters from APLO HQ
Being crazy about music I had to bring Rough Trade into the equation, specifically their East base given that it's a hop, skip and a jump from my desk. Literally. I've just started putting a vinyl collection together so it's a great spot to crate dig but it also boasts a cafe and bar so has a lovely social feel to it. Going that one step further - in the theme of multi-functional spaces - they also regularly turn it into a venue and have an amazing programme of live shows and signings. Swinging down there at lunch and catching my favourite artists? Go on then.

Modern Society
60 meters from APLO HQ

When the shopping experience is becoming more and more digitalised, independent boutiques like Modern Society bring the excitement back into shopping; taking retail therapy away from the high street and into the world of all things cool, young, and independent. Opened in 2015, Modern Society brings together a highly curated selection of some of my favourite brands like Anissa Kermiche and Rejina Pyo. Their multi-faceted retail space is beautifully designed (I’m a sucker for graphic tiles and midnight blue hues)  and has an offering that combines fashion, jewellery, beauty, art, and interior design — and has a lovely café to boot!

If I said that you could have brunch in a foliage-filled conservatory in Spitalfields, you’d probably just laugh me out of the room — but Blixen is exactly that! A cool little oasis that’s got options for whatever you’re in the mood for. Whether that’s breakfast in their conservatory, or cocktails in their art-deco inspired bar. I love the huge variety of veggie options and their cozy garden vibe. A great little treat for when I’m feeling the weight of the city on my shoulders; and the perfect spot to catch up with friends.
